Juoksa Bowhunting

Orimattila, Finland

Welcome to our club website!

“Medieval Scandinavian sources praise the Sámi for their archery skills and powerful bows, which a Norwegian man could not draw. The Northern Sámi once called a bow juoksa. A boy became a man when he was strong enough to draw the bow.”

Our club was founded in Orimattila on 25 May 2015. Since then, we have worked to advance the following objectives, among others:

  • Increase awareness of bowhunting, archery equipment and hunting methods
  • Build, develop and maintain a 3D archery course in the club’s area to improve training opportunities for hunters and other archery enthusiasts
  • Enabling practice in other forms of field archery
  • Organise bowhunting and field archery competitions
  • Provide archery and bowhunting training independently and in cooperation with other organisations
  • Provide hunting opportunities for members
  • Promote knowledge of hunting laws and regulations and encourage outdoor traditions

We welcome everyone interested in archery, and especially bowhunting, to discover the sport. Our club has an excellent 3D course for practice and skill development, as well as a wealth of archery and hunting experience that we are happy to share. If you are interested in joining, please first see Membership.

We are passionate bowhunters and archers.

The club was founded in 2015, so we have now passed the ten-year milestone.

Juoksa 3D course

Challenging targets

Our course has more than 30 3D targets, some of which—such as the small bear shown—are quite challenging for anyone chasing maximum scores.

Shooting situations

Our course has three shooting towers with an eye height of about four metres, adding a new challenge to target shooting.

Shooting distances

Marked shooting distances range from 6 to 45 metres. The course also includes a 120-metre target/sighting-in range and, of course, the 130-metre Iron Deer lane.

Confidence shot

You can test the steadiness of your bow hand against our Iron Deer from distances of up to 130 metres. There is always a good reason to buy new arrows, isn’t there?

Terrain and targets

Our course terrain combines managed woodland with denser cover. There are no major elevation changes, and the course is safe to navigate even in rainy weather. Targets are often placed in very natural-looking surroundings.

Membership

Our members come from many different backgrounds in hunting, archery and bowhunting, or from an interest in these activities. What we all share is the understanding that this is first and foremost a bowhunting club.

Our 3D course is designed especially to prepare archers for hunting situations—without forgetting a few lighter-hearted targets—and we keep this purpose in mind when developing the course and training opportunities. Our members have considerable shooting expertise both on the course and in hunting situations, and we share it as effectively as possible. One answered question and the insight gained from it may be the decisive difference between a successful and unsuccessful hunt.

We do not require new members to have previous hunting experience. In archery, we understand that everyone starts from a different point, and we also provide guidance on choosing a bow and other equipment, basic shooting technique and bow tuning according to each person’s needs.

The following list describes what we hope to see from new members:

  • A positive attitude towards hunting and game management
  • If you have not yet passed the hunter’s examination, a plan and timetable for completing it within 12 months. One requirement for participating in a hunt organised by the club is payment of the game management fee.
  • Being of legal age, or having written consent from a parent or guardian
  • The opportunity to visit our course and become familiar with the sport. If you already own a bow, we can shoot an introductory round together when the season and weather permit.
  • Willingness to write an informal application describing, in your own way, your relationship with hunting, your interest in bowhunting and any other matters you consider relevant to club membership

The club board accepts new members on the basis of proposals that almost always cover the matters listed above. Membership decisions are made flexibly throughout the year, so any time is a good time to apply.

You can get started by contacting the club or its officers, so do not hesitate to get in touch. If you already know a club member, we also encourage you to express your interest through them so the process can move forward.
